2017: Music In Review - The First Quarter
Welcome to the very first music compilation by GABEindie. Yes, this is the very first compilation since my old tumblelog, indienation. And yes, this is a totally different compilation.
I know, GABEindie did not have much activity during the year 2017, in fact the rest of my blogs either, at least not as I expected, due to technical problems (problems with the Internet service, electrical service in Venezuela, and of course my occupations, I am a public accountant and you will imagine).
But I take advantage of these days "of rest" to try to make a small compilation with music that could not be shared in this blog during 2017. Only a small sample.
I hope you enjoy this selection, and although I do not show it, I am always attentive to musical requests and suggestions...

RYAL - Record On
RYAL is an alt-pop project based in New York City, which is comprised of singer/songwriter Jacque Ryal and the renowned NYC producer Aaron Nevezie (of The Bunker fame). “Record On” kicks off with a pulsing distorted bass synth juxtaposed against RYAL’s soulful vocals, before breaking into an anthemic, hook-laden chorus.
Julian Jasper - 2AM Chinatown
Born in San Diego and currently based in LA, Julian Jasper is a Steely Dan for the 21st century, or maybe a lapsed Rundgren after he crossed paths with Ariel Pink. “2AM, Chinatown” sounds like Boz Scaggs on a dopamine bender, with Jasper distractedly strutting and bouncing from one disused phone booth to another looking for a connection.
Ultrviolence - Guillotine (Official Music Video)
Calgary’s post-punk band Ultrviolence shared the eerie first single "Guillotine”, taken from "Forty Knives" EP, the follow-up to 2016 "Black Sea" EP, which builds on the bands’ signature dark wave, shoegazey sound. Frontman Nate Jespersen's lyrics resonate as cold and eerie as the landscape of the desolate Alberta prairie on which he was raised, where he spent years teaching himself how to play a multitude of instruments while honing his craft. Forty Knives echoes the dark solitude that arises when one allows themselves to be completely isolated from the world.

Rosey Carney - Awake Me (Official Music Video)
Rosie Carney’s hauntingly beautiful acoustic video for “Awake Me” features her on the piano performing the powerful confessional which she penned with disarming honesty, recounting her struggles with anorexia and depression. "Awake Me” is a song that’ll stop you dead in your tracks. From the swirling ambience permeating the track to the tender plucked arpeggio, Rosie proves a deft hand at creating sublime tonal flourishes to compliment her vivid lyrics and enchanting voice. At just 19, Rosie Carney has already experienced more of the tumult of life than most her age. Through her raw poetic talent, her experience is channelled into her beautiful music which, at times, recalls the vivid and imaginative folk ambience of Joni Mitchell.
Madeira - Come On Thru (Official Music Video)
"Come On Thru" is taken from Madeira's release "Bad Humors", vía Carpark Records. Music video Directed by Rowan Pierce.
Catch Prichard - Don't Want It
Catch Prichard's "Do not Want It" is a haunting, mesmerizing track, expanding on the gorgeous minimal folk stylings and songwriting that Prichard has become synonymous with, while this song features trumpet and piano accompaniment from Andy Wilke. "Do not Want It" is taken from "O.K. Cool". The soundscapes of his material evoke an atmospheric dream of sweet and low-down folk storytelling, splashed with spacey notes of West coast ambiance and coupled with his dexterous fingerpicking style on his steel guitar.
Waxahatchee - Silver (Official Music Video)
"Silver" is taken from Waxahatchee's album "Out in the Storm" vía Merge Records. Music video made by Catherine Elicson.
ACES - Baby, I Don't Mean To Ignore
ACES’ gorgeous single “Baby, I Don’t Mean To Ignore” is taken from Stranger EP that follows on the heels of her critically-acclaimed series of singles from the past two years. ACES is pop music on muscle relaxers… it’s the bassy backing track with sparse beats that take a back seat to Stewart’s daydreaming vocals. But to really define ACES, we need to go outside the idiom: ACES is a muted light, a French new wave film projected at half speed, a night in with a few friends and heady cocktails.
Beatastic - Act On It
"Act On It" is taken from Beatastic's "I am disgusted by what happened this year and I don't see how it can possibly get any better" EP. This planet is falling apart let’s do something about it.
Ultrviolence - Shadows Of The Thief
“Shadows Of The Thief” is the second single from the Canadian post-punk collective Ultrviolence's "Forty Knives" EP. “Shadows Of The Thief” follows on the heels of the moody first single “Guillotine”, both of which capture the deep resonating sound of lead singer/songwriter Nate Jespersen's brooding baritone vocals, paired with dark, reverb-laden melodies.
Skye Steele - Back In The Valley
Skye Steele is an incredibly talented songwriter and musician who splits his time between Nashville and Brooklyn. "Back In The Valley" is the first single from his album "All That Light". Skye wrote the album in the Bitterroot Valley in Montana before heading to LA to record, where he teamed up with his long-time friend Cassorla (Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Blitzen Trapper, Taylor Goldsmith), who produced and helped to co-write it.
Cadillac White - Paint The Walls
Cadillac White's debut single “Paint The Walls” was produced by WAJU. The track is out through Istanbul’s new cutting-edge label Drug Boulevard. Cadillac White’s team is keeping his identity a mystery. He’s an artist that pulls inspiration from the world around him, and “Paint The Walls” is a sultry cut that’s drenched in heavy bass and Cadillac White’s falsetto.
Psymon Spine - Yoana (Official Music Video)
Psymon Spine is an incredible young experimental pop band based in Brooklyn. "Yoana" is the first single from debut album "You Are Coming To My Birthday", vía Axis Mundi Records. Here's its awesome (also: NSFW) kaleidoscopic video.
Globelamp - San Francisco (Official Music Video)
"San Francisco" is taken from Globelamp's "The Orange Glow" on Wichita Recordings.
NØMADS - Ataxøphobia
"Ataxøphobia" is taken from NØMADS' "Phøbiac" project, their conceptual album based around rare clinical phobias. "Ataxøphobia" isn’t the fear of taxes (something we can all relate to!) but rather the fear of chaos and disorder. The jagged track is the aural equivalent of the phobia, and features Big Data’s singer Lizy Ryan on backing vocals.
EZTV - Hammock (Official Music Video)
"Hammock" is taken from EZTV's sophomore album, "High in Place" on Captured Tracks.
Stay in tune and wait for the next quarters!
